For many years I have been making art as a way to connect with and make sense of the people around me. I’m most often inspired by the way that people interact, form relationships, and express themselves differently in disparate social contexts. This curiosity with human behavior, emotion and identity inspired me to study psychology alongside art in my earlier years of college. My art is also somewhat informed by my experiences as a transgender person. My body and my relationship to it have both drastically changed over time, and with that change comes an understanding of the human form as fluid.
I’ve experimented with a range of two- and three-dimensional media, but largely my work is drawn with graphite or charcoal on paper. Originally this choice was made with cost-effectiveness and portability in mind; over time, though, I came to appreciate the versatility of charcoal and graphite in their ability to use light and shadow to communicate form as well as atmosphere. Some may see their colorlessness as a limitation; however, I find that it is this lack of color that allows the texture and the structure of the subject, the light or darkness of the atmosphere and the expressiveness or controlled quality of the line to remain the focus of a piece. This focus on form and expression carries over into my three-dimensional work as well.
